Tyler Reddick races on as son battles life-threatening tumor and kidney failure

NASCAR driver Tyler Reddick has revealed that his youngest son, Rookie, is facing serious health challenges. The 21-month-old was diagnosed with a chest tumour that has affected his heart and kidney. Reddick, who has kept the situation private until recently, will now race under pressure while supporting his family through the ordeal.

Reddick first spoke publicly about Rookie's condition at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He explained that the tumour is pressing on the boy's renal vein and artery, forcing his heart to work harder. As a result, Rookie's heart has become enlarged, and his right kidney is no longer functioning.

Doctors have confirmed that Rookie will need open surgery to remove the damaged kidney, though a date has not yet been set. Despite the challenges, Reddick shared that his son is now happier and healthier than before, though more medical hurdles remain. The driver had kept the health battle private until his wife, Mona, shared updates before last week's race at Kansas Speedway. Denny Hamlin, co-owner of Reddick's car, has been actively involved in ensuring Rookie receives the best possible care. This weekend, Reddick will start Sunday's race alongside pole-sitter Shane van Gisbergen, who is the heavy favourite. With the playoff field set to shrink from 12 to 8 drivers after the event, Reddick sits below the cutline. A win is likely his only way to avoid elimination.

Reddick has expressed deep gratitude for the support his family has received during this difficult time. The driver now faces the dual challenge of performing on the track while supporting Rookie through surgery and recovery. The outcome of Sunday's race will determine whether his season continues in the playoffs.
