HDx Therapy Proves Cost-Effective and Clinically Strong in Kidney Care

New evidence is reinforcing HDx therapy as a practical and effective treatment in kidney care. Recent studies, including the MOTheR trial and CONCORDIA interim results, show it matches the benefits of online hemodiafiltration (OL-HDF) without extra costs or infrastructure. Experts now highlight its potential to reduce resource use while improving patient outcomes. HDx therapy uses a medium cut-off membrane to remove large-middle molecules, which are linked to inflammation and cardiovascular disease in dialysis patients. Unlike OL-HDF, it can be delivered with existing hemodialysis equipment, requiring no additional infrastructure or nurse training.

A provider-perspective analysis from Spain found HDx may cut per-session costs by 8% to 18% compared to OL-HDF. It also reduces water consumption by 20%, offering both financial and environmental advantages. Two clinical studies from Vantive confirm HDx therapy, enabled by the Theranova dialyzer, delivers outcomes similar to OL-HDF. The MOTheR trial demonstrated non-inferiority in a composite endpoint of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular events. Meanwhile, interim results from the CONCORDIA study showed HDx was non-inferior to HDF in all-cause mortality. Dr. Patricia de Sequera, chief of nephrology at Hospital Universitario Infanta Leonor in Madrid, now considers HDx a clinically valid option based on these findings. Peter Rutherford, head of Worldwide Medical at Vantive, also emphasises the growing evidence supporting its role in modern kidney care. Vantive, a company with a 70-year history in kidney care innovation, provides solutions that reach over 1 million patients daily. Their focus remains on extending lives and expanding treatment possibilities for patients and care teams worldwide.

HDx therapy is emerging as a cost-effective and clinically sound alternative to OL-HDF. With proven non-inferiority in key trials and practical advantages in delivery, it could reshape dialysis treatment. The therapy’s ability to lower costs and resource use may further encourage its adoption in kidney care settings.
