Russian court fines medical graduate $3,500 for breaking work contract

A court in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod Region has fined a medical graduate for breaking her work contract. The former student was legally bound to serve at a city hospital after finishing her studies. Instead The graduate completed her cardiology residency in 2019. Under a targeted education agreement, she was obliged to work at a local clinical hospital for a set period. However, she never began her service at the assigned facility.

The Kstovo City Court ruled that her failure to meet the contract terms warranted a penalty. As a result, she must now pay a fine of 319,100 rubles (around $3,500).

The fine follows a legal decision upholding the terms of the targeted education programme. The graduate’s refusal to work at the hospital led to the financial penalty. Such agreements typically require graduates to serve in specified roles in exchange for state-funded training.
