Kazakhstan's First Laparoscopic Whipple Surgery Performed in Shymkent

A groundbreaking laparoscopic pancreatic surgery has taken place for the first time at Shymkent’s Multidisciplinary Oncology Center. The procedure, known as the Whipple operation, targets malignant tumours in the pancreas and nearby organs. It marks a significant step in Kazakhstan’s adoption of advanced surgical techniques. The surgery was performed using modern laparoscopic technology. This approach involves small punctures and high-precision endoscopic tools, which reduce pain, lower complication risks, and shorten recovery time. The Whipple procedure, or laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy, is now available locally in Shymkent.

Anuar Abdikarimov, an oncologist from Astana, led the effort by conducting demonstration surgeries during an educational masterclass. Three patients underwent laparoscopic procedures under his guidance. The initiative received support from leading specialists at the National Scientific Medical Center.

Talgat Kurmanov, director of the Shymkent center, highlighted the institution’s commitment to adopting cutting-edge cancer diagnosis and treatment methods. The facility operates six advanced surgical theatres and performs over 300 high-tech procedures yearly. Knowledge sharing among specialists across Kazakhstan remains key to advancing minimally invasive surgery. The introduction of this technique allows Shymkent residents to access complex care without travelling far. This reduces both financial and emotional strain on patients and their families. Kazakhstan continues to align its surgical capabilities with global standards.
