Việt Nam battles extreme heat as temperatures hit 40°C nationwide
Temperatures across Việt Nam have soared, with many areas recording extreme heat. Central regions have seen readings above 38 degrees Celsius, while Hà Nội has experienced highs of 39-40 degrees Celsius at different times of the day. Heatwaves are gripping much of the country, with temperatures ranging from 36 to 40 degrees Celsius. Urban areas face an additional challenge due to the 'heat island' effect, which can make the perceived temperature 2-4 degrees Celsius higher than official measurements.
Outdoor workers, such as construction labourers, delivery drivers, ride-hailing drivers, and farmers, are among the most exposed to the harsh conditions. The extreme heat forces the body to work harder to cool itself, raising the risk of cardiovascular events or worsening existing heart conditions. Experts advise drinking water regularly, avoiding prolonged exposure to high temperatures, and seeking medical help if symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath occur.
Meteorologists have also warned about the increasing likelihood of El Niño intensifying. There is now a 60-65% chance it could reach very strong levels by the end of this year and early next year. The phenomenon is forecast to persist until the end of 2026 and may extend into early 2027. The elderly, individuals with cardiovascular diseases, and those working outdoors for long periods are urged to take extra precautions. The ongoing heatwave and potential El Niño intensification could prolong extreme weather conditions across the country. Authorities continue to stress the importance of staying hydrated and limiting exposure to high temperatures.
