The VI Congress of Neurosurgeons took place in Karaganda, drawing over 200 specialists from across the field. The event coincided with Kazakhstan’s Medical Workers’ Day, marking a significant moment for the country’s medical community. Serik Akshulakov, President of the Kazakh Association of Neurosurgeons, opened the congress with a keynote address. Delegates attended over 50 presentations, each exploring different advancements in modern neurosurgery.
The Young Scientists Competition formed part of the programme, with winners announced during the event. Additionally, the Serik Akshulakov Prize was awarded to two residents in recognition of their exceptional contributions to neurosurgery. Eighteen veteran specialists also received medals for their long-standing dedication to developing the nation’s neurosurgical services.
Kazakhstan’s neurosurgical school has a long history of hosting major international forums, including the Asian Congress of Neurological Surgeons. The National Center for Neurosurgery in Astana, established 18 years ago, has gained international renown. It houses the only Gamma Knife in Central Asia, offering free treatment to Kazakh citizens. The congress highlighted Kazakhstan’s growing influence in neurosurgery. The awards and presentations underscored the country’s commitment to advancing medical expertise. The event also reinforced the nation’s role in providing specialised care through facilities like the Gamma Knife centre.
