Schmalkalden-Meiningen Offers Medical Scholarships to Combat Rural Doctor Shortage
The Schmalkalden-Meiningen district has expanded its medical scholarship program for the 2026/27 winter semester. The initiative aims to tackle the local shortage of skilled healthcare professionals. It also seeks to secure long-term medical services in rural areas of the district. The program will award three scholarships to eligible medical students. Applicants must be enrolled at a German or European university, with priority given to those with connections to the district. Each recipient will receive €500 per month for up to five years.
In return, scholarship holders must commit to working in the district for at least five years after completing their studies. The district hopes this will encourage young physicians to stay and strengthen local healthcare. Applications must be submitted in writing to the Schmalkalden-Meiningen District Office by July 31, 2026.
Further information and the application form are available on the district’s website at www.lra-sm.de/medizin-stipendium/. The program is part of a broader effort to ensure sustainable healthcare in rural communities. The scholarships offer financial support to aspiring doctors. They also aim to address the district’s need for long-term medical staff. Successful applicants will contribute to local healthcare while benefiting from the program’s funding.
