Facet Arthropathy: The Hidden Cause of Your Stubborn Back Pain
Facet arthropathy is a form of arthritis affecting the spine’s facet joints. These joints connect the vertebrae and allow smooth movement, but wear and tear over time can lead to pain and stiffness. The condition often develops with age and differs from other back problems like slipped discs or sciatica.
The facet joints sit at the back of each vertebra, helping the spine bend and twist. When these joints wear down or become inflamed, the result is facet arthropathy. Common causes include aging, osteoarthritis, previous injuries, or the growth of synovial cysts.
Pain from this condition usually stays in the lower back, unlike sciatica, which shoots down the legs. Sufferers often describe a dull ache on one or both sides of the back, worsening when bending backward, standing for long periods, or twisting. In some cases, bone spurs may form, narrowing the spinal canal and leading to spinal stenosis. This can then cause numbness, weakness, or pain in the buttocks and legs.
Doctors diagnose facet arthropathy through a mix of methods. A physical exam checks for tenderness and movement issues, while imaging tests like X-rays or bone scans reveal joint damage. Steroid injections into the facet joints can also help confirm the diagnosis by temporarily relieving pain.
While facet arthropathy can be painful, it rarely leads to severe spinal disease. Early diagnosis through exams and imaging helps manage symptoms effectively. Treatment often focuses on reducing discomfort and improving mobility for those affected.
