Rabies Outbreak in Yakutia Sparks Urgent Warnings After Infected Arctic Foxes Found

A rabies outbreak has been confirmed in Yakutia after infected arctic foxes were found near Chokurdakh. The disease poses serious risks to both animals and humans, prompting urgent warnings from local authorities. Six separate cases involving domestic reindeer and wild animals have already been reported across the region this year. The Yakutia Republican Veterinary Testing Laboratory confirmed the latest outbreak on December 6, 2023. Two infected foxes were discovered near the Chokurdakh oil depot and on Belkechek Island in the Allaihovsky District.

Authorities are advising residents to avoid contact with wild or stray animals. If bitten, the wound must be washed immediately with soap and water, followed by medical treatment. Pet owners are also being reminded to vaccinate dogs, cats, and other domestic animals against rabies every year. Puppies and kittens must receive their first vaccination by two months of age.

Unusual behaviour in pets, such as aggression or lethargy, should be taken seriously. Owners are urged to isolate the animal and seek veterinary care without delay. The outbreak highlights the ongoing threat of rabies in Yakutia. Vaccination remains the most effective way to protect pets and prevent the disease from spreading. Residents are being reminded to stay vigilant and follow safety measures to reduce risks.
