How VR Reveals the Mind of a Burglar in Target Selection

A recent study has used virtual reality to explore how burglars choose their targets. Researchers examined the decisions of 160 incarcerated offenders as they navigated a simulated neighbourhood. The findings offer new insights into crime prevention strategies for homeowners. The study involved burglars from Pennsylvania prisons who assessed virtual homes for potential break-ins. Thick shrubbery in front of a property made it seem less risky, as it reduced the chance of being spotted. A discarded TV box by a bin also signalled valuable items inside, increasing the likelihood of a burglary.

Signs referencing the Second Amendment had a mixed effect. They raised perceived danger but also suggested higher potential rewards. Experienced burglars were particularly drawn to these homes, seeing them as high-payoff targets with manageable risk.

Criminal experience played a key role in decision-making. Seasoned offenders were more willing to commit burglaries and judged risks differently compared to less experienced individuals. The research highlights how perceptions of risk and reward shape burglars’ choices. It suggests that prevention measures may need to adapt depending on the type of offender. Virtual reality has proven useful in testing these strategies, with the study continuing to attract attention since its publication on 9 May 2025.
