Mumbai's BMC deploys Cancer Patient Navigators to bridge treatment gaps

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has launched a new initiative to support cancer patients across Mumbai. The programme, part of the Cancer Care Bharat initiative, will deploy 24 trained Cancer Patient Navigators across the city’s 24 administrative wards. This effort aims to improve access to cancer treatment and ensure equitable healthcare for all citizens. The navigators are part of BMC’s cancer screening programme and have received specialised training through Tata Memorial Centre’s (TMC) Patient Navigation in Oncology Care Programme. This programme is a joint effort between TMC and ECHO India. Their role will involve guiding patients from diagnosis to treatment, ensuring they do not feel lost or isolated during the process.

Each navigator will explain treatment options, associated costs, and available government support schemes to patients and their families. They will also assist in accessing referrals, counselling, and follow-up care, acting as a bridge between patients and healthcare providers. Dr. Daksha Shah, Executive Health Officer at BMC, confirmed their involvement in the screening programme and their readiness to support patients.

Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director of TMC, emphasised the growing need for such programmes due to India’s ageing population and increasing cancer burden. He noted that innovative healthcare models, like the ECHO model and dedicated Patient Navigators, are essential for addressing these challenges. Dr. R.A. Badwe further highlighted the importance of these navigators, stating that patients view them as part of the medical team, while doctors see them as an extension of the patient’s family. The programme aims to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate care throughout their cancer journey. By providing guidance and support, the navigators will help improve treatment access and outcomes for those diagnosed through BMC’s screening efforts. The initiative marks a significant step towards healthier ageing and more equitable cancer care in Mumbai.
