Companionship during anesthesia at Halle University Hospital - More security before surgery: Parents can accompany their child until they fall asleep

Halle Hospital Lets Parents Stay Until Kids Fall Asleep Before Surgery

University Hospital Halle (Saale) has introduced a new initiative to support young patients facing surgery. Parents can now accompany their children into the anaesthesia induction area and remain with them until they fall asleep. The programme aims to reduce anxiety and provide greater comfort during a stressful time. The decision to allow parental presence is made by the anaesthesia team just before the procedure. If no medical or logistical issues arise—such as acute infections, fever, gastrointestinal problems, or emergency situations—a nurse escorts the child and one parent to the induction area. The accompanying adult receives protective hygiene gear and a briefing on the process.

Once inside, the parent stays with their child as anaesthesia is administered. They remain until the child is fully asleep. Benjamin Schüler, head of anaesthesia, notes that having a trusted loved one nearby can significantly ease a child’s fears. The programme applies to all scheduled anaesthetic inductions for children and adolescents. Since its launch, feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive. Many parents report that their children feel calmer and more secure during the process.

The initiative reflects a growing focus on patient comfort in paediatric care. By allowing parents to stay until their child is asleep, the hospital hopes to make surgical procedures less daunting. So far, the response suggests it has made a noticeable difference for young patients and their families.
