Omsk Oblast's hepatitis crisis surges past Russia's national average

Viral hepatitis rates in Russia have risen sharply in several regions. Omsk Oblast now leads the country with infection levels far above the national average. Other areas, including Kamchatka Krai, Crimea, and St. Petersburg, also report significantly higher cases. In 2025, Omsk Oblast recorded 2,143 cases of chronic viral hepatitis. This translates to 118.27 cases per 100,000 people, more than double the national figure. The region also reported 1,819 cases of Hepatitis C, or 100.39 per 100,000.

The Hepatitis C rate in Omsk Oblast has surged to more than twice the levels seen between 2022 and 2024. This sharp increase makes it the most affected area in Russia. Across the country, 35 regions now exceed the average infection rate, with Kamchatka Krai, Crimea, and St. Petersburg each reporting cases roughly twice as high as elsewhere. Omsk Oblast’s rates remain the highest in Russia. The region’s Hepatitis C infections have reached a critical point. Public health officials will likely focus on these areas to address the growing concern.
