Mumbai Medical Breakthrough: Kandivali's BDBA Hospital Performs First Free Robotic Knee Replacement Surgeries

Mumbai's BDBA Hospital performs first free robotic knee replacements

BDBA Hospital in Kandivali has completed its first two free robotic total knee replacement surgeries. The procedures mark a significant step in offering advanced orthopaedic care in Mumbai’s public healthcare sector. Both operations were performed at no cost to the patients, with private treatment typically priced around Rs 4 lakh. The surgeries involved two 52-year-old women. Nagamma Hirana received a robotic total knee replacement on her right knee due to advanced arthritis and a severe varus deformity. Nirmala Koli underwent the same procedure on her left knee, suffering from bilateral knee arthritis.

Dr Amit Dhond, Head of the Orthopaedics Department, led a multidisciplinary team in performing the operations. The hospital used the CUVIS Robotic System, provided free of charge by Biorad Medisys (CUREXO). This technology allows for precise implant placement, minimises tissue damage, and supports faster recovery with better long-term results.

Dr Ajay Gupta, Medical Superintendent of BDBA Hospital, emphasised the institution’s commitment to adopting advanced medical technologies. The hospital stated its dedication to providing high-quality healthcare to all sections of society. The successful surgeries aim to position BDBA Hospital as a leading centre for advanced orthopaedic care in Mumbai. The use of robotic technology and free treatment highlights the hospital’s push to expand access to cutting-edge medical solutions. Both patients are expected to benefit from improved mobility and reduced recovery time.
