Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drugs show promise amid financial decline
Novo Nordisk has faced financial struggles despite progress in its weight-loss drug pipeline. The company’s stock has fallen by roughly 68% over the past two years, while revenue forecasts for 2026 suggest a decline. Yet, recent trial results for new treatments like amycretin and semaglutide show promise in tackling obesity and related conditions. In clinical trials, semaglutide demonstrated significant benefits beyond weight loss. Patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure saw a 5.48 mmHg greater reduction in systolic pressure compared to placebo. The 2.4 mg injection also cut the risk of obstructive sleep apnea by 52% when measured against a placebo group.
Amycretin, a dual-action drug targeting GLP-1 and amylin receptors, delivered up to 14.6% weight loss in phase 2 testing. Unlike some competitors, it showed no sign of a weight-loss plateau at higher doses. Novo Nordisk now plans to develop both injectable and oral versions of the drug. Phase 3 trial designs and potential comparisons with rival treatments, such as Eli Lilly’s Zepbound, will be closely watched. The company’s oral Wegovy pill has also gained traction, appealing to patients who prefer tablets over injections. However, financial challenges persist. Novo Nordisk revised its revenue guidance downward multiple times in 2025 and expects a further decline in 2026. Meanwhile, Eli Lilly’s Zepbound outperformed Novo Nordisk’s CagriSema in weight-loss trials, adding pressure to the competition.
Novo Nordisk’s pipeline shows strong clinical results, particularly with amycretin and semaglutide. The company is expanding into oral treatments while facing ongoing financial setbacks. Upcoming phase 3 data and market performance will determine whether these innovations can offset recent revenue declines.
