Russian surgeons save fertility by removing giant uterine fibroid

Gynecologists at St. Petersburg State University’s N.I. Pirogov High Medical Technology Clinic have successfully removed a massive uterine fibroid from a patient. The woman, from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, underwent the procedure using a minimally invasive approach. The operation was later reported by the Bokal Press Telegram channel. The medical team, led by obstetrician-gynaecologist and surgeon Lada Pokrovskaya, prioritised preserving the patient’s ability to conceive. Pokrovskaya noted that removing the uterus would have been the simplest option. Instead, the clinic focused on safeguarding her future fertility.

Advanced surgical methods enabled the removal of the large tumour through small incisions. Such procedures fall under the federal high-tech medical care quota system. This means patients receive treatment without charge. The woman’s fertility remained fully intact after the surgery. Pokrovskaya emphasised that even complex diagnoses need not remove the possibility of motherhood. The success of the operation highlights the benefits of modern, minimally invasive techniques.
