Komi Hospital Launches Life-Changing Bariatric Surgery for Severe Obesity

The Komi Republican Clinical Hospital (KRCH) has introduced bariatric surgery to address severe obesity in the region. Over 120,000 residents in the Republic of Komi live with class II or III obesity. The hospital’s multidisciplinary team now performs procedures to help patients achieve significant weight loss and improve health outcomes. KRCH offers two main types of bariatric surgery: sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. Sleeve gastrectomy removes 70-80% of the stomach, leaving a small pouch of 70-80 ml. Gastric bypass is more complex, creating a new path for food and reducing calorie absorption. Both procedures are performed laparoscopically through small incisions, which reduces scarring and speeds up recovery.

Bariatric surgery also helps regulate hormones linked to hunger and diabetes. It suppresses ghrelin, the hormone that stimulates appetite, and improves insulin function. As a result, 75-90% of type 2 diabetes patients experience lasting remission within two years after surgery. Patients can also lose up to 60% of their excess weight following the procedure.

The Republic of Komi has a high rate of type 2 diabetes, ranking 14th in Russia for its prevalence. The team at KRCH ensures patient safety and optimal results through careful planning and coordinated care. The introduction of bariatric surgery at KRCH provides a new treatment option for severe obesity and related conditions. The procedures offer long-term benefits, including substantial weight loss and improved diabetes control. The hospital’s approach combines advanced medical techniques with dedicated patient support.
