LahnEggs Daycare Leads the Way in Sustainability and Fair Trade Education
LahnEggs daycare in Lahnstein is taking big steps towards sustainability and fair trade. The centre has woven eco-friendly habits into its daily routines and teaching methods. Parents and local residents are now being invited to join the effort in creating a fairer, greener environment for children. The daycare has launched several projects to promote sustainability among its groups. Children have planted their own vegetables and set up a swap box for books and toys. A new waste management system also helps teach them about recycling in a hands-on way.
A partnership with the One World Shop has strengthened these efforts. A swap initiative in the entryway now allows families to exchange non-perishable food items. Before the holidays, the centre organised a visit to the shop, where staff and parents bought fair-trade goods for the festive season. To push these goals further, LahnEggs formed a 'Fair Team' made up of educators Manuel Hein and Jenny Dummermuth, along with a dedicated parent, Ms. Zöge. Their task is to guide the daycare toward Fair Trade certification by meeting strict criteria. The team also hosted a 'Fair Parents’ Café' to discuss sustainability with families. On December 14, the centre opened its doors for a public Advent café. The event showcased its fair-trade and eco-friendly projects, giving visitors a firsthand look at the changes taking place.
LahnEggs is working to deepen its commitment to sustainability and fair trade. The centre plans to expand its educational projects and offer more fair-trade options for parents. Achieving Fair Trade Daycare certification remains the next major milestone for the team.
