King County faces deadly surge in drug overdoses with 37 fatalities in weeks

King County has seen a sharp rise in drug-related fatalities in recent weeks. Since late May, the Medical Examiner’s Office has recorded 37 deaths linked to substance intoxication across the region. The first reported case was Wanda Elaine Hembd, a 61-year-old woman from Kent. She died on April 10 from a mix of morphine, mitragynine, cyclobenzaprine, and bupropion. Weeks later, on April 21, Emmanuel Ramirez, a 42-year-old man from Seatac, succumbed to a combination of mitragynine compounds, butalbital, oxycodone, fluoxetine, and lorazepam.

A cluster of deaths occurred in early June. David Lynn Winter, a 62-year-old Seattle resident, died on June 4 from fentanyl and methamphetamine. The next day, Michael Duane Stegemann, 53, passed away in Kent from the same substances. On June 6, Robert Joseph Lumpkin, 47, died in Auburn after consuming fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine.

The following day, June 7, saw two more fatalities in Seattle. Ralph Alexander Young, 64, died from fentanyl alone, while Daniel Vincent Smith, 37, succumbed to a mix of fentanyl and methamphetamine. Kneejamaya Lovie-Lajoy Goldsmith, 22, was found dead in Seattle on June 8, also from fentanyl. The most recent case was Samuel Lang Hiltenbrand, 28, who died outdoors in Seattle on June 10 from fentanyl intoxication. The total count of drug-related deaths in King County now stands at 37 since May 26. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding these cases. The Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed the substances involved in each fatality.
