Boehringer's survodutide shows breakthrough results in obesity and liver disease trials
Boehringer Ingelheim has announced positive results from two global Phase III trials of survodutide (BI 456906). The studies, known as SYNCHRONIZE-1 and SYNCHRONIZE-MASLD, focused on adults with obesity or overweight, including those with liver disease. Findings were presented at the American Diabetes Association’s 2026 Scientific Sessions.
The first trial, SYNCHRONIZE-1, involved adults with obesity or overweight who did not have type 2 diabetes. The second, SYNCHRONIZE-MASLD, targeted individuals with metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) showing signs of inflammation or fibrosis. Both trials demonstrated survodutide’s ability to reduce weight in these distinct groups.
Results were also published in *The New England Journal of Medicine* and *Nature Medicine*. The data suggest survodutide could improve metabolic health in adults with obesity or overweight, regardless of diabetes status. For those with MASLD, the drug showed potential to enhance liver health by cutting weight and reducing inflammation. The outcomes highlight survodutide’s versatility in addressing different metabolic conditions. Researchers now anticipate further studies and clinical applications based on these findings.
The trials confirm survodutide’s promise in managing obesity-related conditions. With results published in leading medical journals, the drug’s development is likely to advance. Future research will explore broader uses for metabolic and liver health treatments.
