Deadly failures at Texas immigration camp expose systemic neglect and mismanagement

A series of failures at Camp East Montana, an immigration detention facility in Texas, has led to dangerous conditions and multiple deaths. Over the past six months, three detainees have died while in custody, with reports highlighting severe mismanagement and neglected safety protocols. The facility, operated by an inexperienced contractor, opened prematurely before construction was finished. Inspections revealed missing security cameras, poor wheelchair access, and insufficient recreational and legal resources. Basic ICE detention standards were not met from the start.

Medical care and sanitation were also overlooked. A tuberculosis outbreak occurred after an infected detainee was housed with others, exposing many to the disease. Evidence related to the death of a 55-year-old Cuban migrant—who died after being restrained by guards—was later found missing or destroyed. Security lapses added to the chaos. In October, a detainee escaped due to contractor negligence. A loaded firearm was also lost inside the facility and never recovered. Financial waste further plagued operations, as millions were spent on unused meals and services due to a poorly structured contract that failed to account for changing detainee numbers. Officials admitted the contractor faced a 'significant learning curve' in managing such a facility. Despite the risks, ICE proceeded with the camp’s opening, ignoring critical gaps in safety and oversight.

The deaths and ongoing issues at Camp East Montana highlight the consequences of rushed operations and inadequate oversight. With three fatalities in six months, investigations continue into the facility’s failures, including missing evidence, security breaches, and preventable health risks.
