Davao hosts free kidney health screenings for National Kidney Month

The Department of Health and the Philippine Society of Nephrology Davao Chapter will mark National Kidney Month with a special event. The culmination activity takes place on 26 June at SM City Davao Annex. It will include health talks, free screenings, consultations, and community activities focused on kidney health. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains a significant health concern in the Philippines. Around 150,000 people nationwide are currently undergoing dialysis due to the condition. In Davao Region alone, about 6,500 individuals receive regular treatment.

Most CKD patients are aged between 40 and 60, but the disease can affect younger people as well. Dr Richelle May Cajoles-Pagarigan has treated patients as young as 15. Early-stage CKD often shows no symptoms, earning it the nickname 'silent disease'. When signs do appear, they may include fatigue, swelling, blood in the urine, or persistent hiccups.

Health officials stress the importance of early detection. Simple tests like urinalysis, creatinine checks, and kidney ultrasounds can identify problems before they worsen. They encourage anyone with abnormal results to consult a specialist promptly. The upcoming event aims to raise awareness and provide accessible health services. Free screenings and expert advice will be available to help detect kidney issues early. This initiative supports efforts to reduce the growing number of CKD cases in the region.
