Nurse and former patient share emotional farewell after 58 years of healing

A retired nurse and a former patient shared an emotional moment at her farewell. Wynola Wayne left her nursing career after 58 years, celebrated with a five-minute standing ovation. Marco Houpe, once her patient, was there to escort her out, calling her an angel. In 1965, a Christmas tree fire left 15-month-old Marco Houpe with third-degree burns over 85% of his body. He was rushed to Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where Wynola Wayne, a trainee nurse in the burn unit, took charge of his care. She stayed by his side throughout his recovery, showing dedication that Houpe’s parents later said saved his life.

Decades later, Houpe still remembers her compassion. He now considers her his guardian angel. In a touching gesture, Wynola Wayne named her own son after him, inspired by his resilience. Houpe has since built a life of his own, marrying, raising two children, and working as a school administrator and coach. The bond between the two endured long after Houpe’s recovery. At her retirement, he escorted her from the building, symbolising the lasting impact of her care. Their story highlights the profound difference a nurse can make in a patient’s life.
