Medical students save passenger's life during mid-air emergency on Vladivostok flight
A group of medical students from Vladivostok’s Basic Medical College sprang into action mid-flight when a passenger fell seriously ill. The incident took place on May 18 during an eight-hour journey from Vladivostok to Moscow, just days before the students were due to compete in Minsk. The emergency began when a 59-year-old woman lost consciousness aboard the aircraft. Without hesitation, the students used a stethoscope, a blood pressure monitor, and the plane’s medical kit to assess her condition. For six hours, they worked to stabilise her while the flight continued toward Moscow.
Upon landing, the passenger was immediately transferred to ground medical services for further treatment. The students later travelled to Minsk, where they were recognised for their quick thinking. During the Olympiad, they received commemorative awards featuring the emblem of the *Start a Heart* educational project. The flight had lasted eight hours and 35 minutes in total. Despite the long ordeal, the students’ efforts ensured the passenger’s condition remained stable until professional help took over.
The students’ actions earned them formal recognition at the international competition. Their training and quick response made a critical difference during the medical emergency. The awards now serve as a reminder of their skill and composure under pressure.
