India's drone revolution is transforming logistics and saving lives
India is rapidly expanding its use of drones for logistics, with a focus on postal services and life-saving deliveries. The technology promises to revolutionise access to remote areas, carrying essential goods like medicine and mail over long distances in challenging conditions. The first postal drone operation in India took place in Gujarat in 2022. A drone successfully transported mail over 46 km in just 25 minutes. Since then, India Post has extended the project to Himachal Pradesh and Assam, where drones now deliver mail up to 80 km away.
Weather-resistant drones are being developed with machine learning and AI to handle extreme temperatures. These models can carry payloads of up to 10 kg in conditions ranging from -10°C to 50°C. Beyond post, drones are also being used to transport critical drugs and anti-venom to rural areas, where access is often limited.
India currently has nearly 43,000 trained remote pilots. Training programmes vary, from advanced M. Tech courses at IITs to basic end-user certifications. The Department of Posts has been actively testing drone-based movement of postal articles as part of this growth. The government sees drones as a key driver for employment in logistics, agriculture, and disaster management. With a push to become a global drone hub, India is strengthening its manufacturing and funding ecosystem. This expansion could transform how goods and services reach remote and difficult terrain across the country.
