AIIMS Professor Researches Sperm Retrieval In Case Of Hanging Death

Indian forensic researchers unveil groundbreaking studies at global conference

Three forensic researchers from India recently presented their findings at the International Association of Forensic Sciences (IAFS) programme in Sofia, Bulgaria. Their studies covered a range of topics, from post-mortem procedures to advanced imaging techniques in medicolegal investigations. Dr Raghvendra Kumar Vidua led three research projects at the event. One explored the use of an innovative sample dryer for forensic investigations, testing its efficiency in preserving evidence. Another focused on forensic radiology and imaging, examining how these tools improve medicolegal cases in India.

His third study investigated post-mortem sperm retrieval (PMSR) in hanging-induced asphyxia. The findings showed that sperm can often be successfully collected within 24 hours of death, as abrupt cerebral hypoxia limits wider cellular damage. Two other researchers also contributed to the programme. Aswini Chandran, a PhD scholar, studied how post-mortem microbiology and biomarker technology could improve the accuracy of death investigations. Meanwhile, Dr Abarnna Sree SB, a junior resident, analysed histopathological changes in the pineal, pituitary, and adrenal glands of suicide victims. Her work included hormonal and psychological assessments to better understand these deaths.

The research presented in Sofia highlights new methods in forensic science. Techniques like improved sample drying, advanced imaging, and refined post-mortem procedures could strengthen future investigations. These studies also provide deeper insights into the biological and psychological factors involved in deaths from hanging and suicide.
