Global Surgeons Converge in Nizhny Novgorod for Transplant Breakthroughs

The Volga District Medical Center (VDMC) will host a major medical conference in Nizhny Novgorod on May 21. Leading surgeons from Germany, the US, Belarus, and Russia will gather to discuss advances in organ transplantation and liver and pancreas surgery. The event highlights the region’s growing role in complex medical procedures. The VDMC has been a key centre for organ transplantation in Russia for over a decade. In March 2009, its team carried out the Nizhny Novgorod Region’s first successful kidney transplant. Two months later, they performed the region’s first liver transplant.

By summer 2009, the hospital’s Unit No. 1 had opened the area’s first dedicated organ transplantation department. That same year, the VDMC also established an Organ and Tissue Donation Center and launched a postmortem donor program. Organ transplantation remains the only effective treatment for end-stage failure of vital organs, including the liver, kidneys, pancreas, heart, and lungs. Thousands of such procedures are performed globally each year. The upcoming conference will bring together experts from Moscow and St. Petersburg’s top medical institutions, alongside international specialists.

The High Technologies in Medicine conference will focus on improving surgical techniques and expanding access to life-saving transplants. The VDMC’s long-standing work in the field positions it as a major hub for organ donation and transplantation in Russia.
