Astral Systems secures £28M to revolutionize fusion and medical isotopes

Astral Systems has secured fresh funding to boost its fusion technology and medical isotope production. The company, founded by Talmon Firestone and Dr. Tom Wallace-Smith, now aims to expand its modular reactors and accelerate research. The latest investment pushes its total funding past £28 million. The new funds come from investors including Tees River, Daphni, Blast Club, Speedinvest, and Playfair Capital. Astral Systems will use the capital to develop medical isotopes using its proprietary multi-state fusion (MSF) technology. This approach promises higher efficiency and lower costs than conventional reactors.

The company is also building a high-energy facility at the former Berkeley Power Station in Gloucestershire. It plans to have multiple reactors running at full capacity by the end of the year. Additionally, it targets the commercial launch of one or more medical isotopes by 2027.

Radioisotopes play a vital role in over 50 million medical procedures annually. Demand is expected to grow due to an ageing population and rising cancer rates. Astral Systems has already generated over £3 million in revenue and currently employs 23 people, with plans to increase its workforce to more than 40 by the end of 2026. The investment will support the expansion of production and research. The company’s technology could address the rising need for medical isotopes. Astral Systems is on track to scale its operations and enter the market with new products within the next few years.
