Hospital Sets New Standard with Certified Diabetes Care Program
GFO Kliniken Rhein-Berg has achieved certified diabetes care, setting a high standard for inpatient treatment. The hospital’s team, based at Vinzenz Pallotti Hospital in Bensberg, provides specialised support across all wards. This level of care is not yet common in many medical facilities. The diabetes care team recently received certification from the German Diabetes Association (DDG). Their work begins as soon as a patient’s blood glucose exceeds 200 mg/dL on admission. The experts then review and adjust the treatment plan to stabilise metabolism.
Every ward has at least two nurses trained in diabetes management. These staff members receive regular foundational courses and annual updates on the latest care developments. Nutritional counsellor Mirjam Miczka stresses the importance of this ongoing training for effective blood sugar control.
Around 20 percent of inpatients at the hospital face blood sugar issues, even when treated for unrelated conditions. Diabetes advisor Elisabeth Niemand points to the team’s expertise as a key factor in addressing these challenges. The hospital’s certified approach delivers clear benefits. Patients experience lower mortality rates, fewer complications, and reduced readmissions. Hospital stays are shorter, and wound healing improves as a result of the specialised care.
