Three Anne Arundel County beaches closed due to unsafe bacteria levels

The Anne Arundel County Department of Health has issued health advisories for three local beaches. Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor are currently unsafe for water contact. Elevated levels of enterococci bacteria have been detected in the water. Routine water quality testing revealed unsafe bacteria levels at these locations. The latest results, received on Wednesday, confirmed the contamination exceeded safe limits for recreational activities. As a result, health officials issued an advisory for Carrollton Manor on Thursday.

The Department of Health warns against swimming, water skiing, or jet skiing at the affected beaches. Ingestion of enterococci bacteria can lead to gastrointestinal problems, including diarrhoea or vomiting. People with open cuts or wounds are also advised to avoid swimming in natural bodies of water to prevent infection.

If contact with contaminated water occurs, immediate washing with hot water and soap is recommended. Heavy rainfall can worsen water quality, so officials advise waiting at least 48 hours after such events before swimming. Fishing and crabbing may continue, but protective gloves should be worn when handling catches, and seafood must be cooked thoroughly before consumption. The advisories remain in place for Bayside Beach, Upper Magothy Beach, and Carrollton Manor. Residents and visitors are urged to follow the health guidelines to avoid illness. Updates will be provided as further test results become available.
