Global Experts Train Kazakh Surgeons in Life-Changing Pediatric Reconstructive Surgery
An international master class on paediatric reconstructive and plastic surgery recently took place in the city. The event brought together specialists from across Kazakhstan to improve treatment for young patients with thermal injuries. Professor Timur Tornov, a leading reconstructive microsurgeon and hand surgeon from Russia, led the training. Doctors from Almaty, Shymkent, and Atyrau attended the sessions to learn new techniques.
During the master class, seven children underwent surgery. The youngest patient was three years old, while the oldest was 17. Local surgeons worked alongside Russian specialists from Almaty’s Children’s Emergency Medical Center to perform the procedures.
The event was supported by the Volunteer Society 'Mercy' charitable foundation. It aimed to enhance skills in treating minors with severe burns and other injuries requiring reconstructive surgery. The Children’s Emergency Medical Center in Almaty already performs over 230 reconstructive plastic surgeries each year. The knowledge shared during the master class is expected to improve access to high-tech medical care for young patients across Kazakhstan.
