Ulcerative Colitis: Running To Raise Awareness

Two UC Warriors Race Savannah Half Marathon to Defy Their Diagnosis

Two men with ulcerative colitis (UC) are taking on the Savannah Half Marathon to prove the condition doesn’t have to hold them back. Brian Schlosser, 40, and Joseph Carrotta, 37, are running to raise awareness—and funds—for the chronic illness. Both say the right care and determination keep them active despite their diagnosis. Joseph Carrotta first laced up his running shoes in 2018, motivated by his wife and daughters. He wanted to show that UC, though challenging, could be managed with proper treatment. Running with Team Challenge, a charity group, has given him a strong support network along the way.

Brian Schlosser shares the same drive. His goal is to 'beat the hell out of this disease' by pushing his limits and proving UC doesn’t define what he can achieve. Like Carrotta, he’s using the half marathon to raise money and spread awareness about the condition. Both runners have trained hard, balancing their health needs with their athletic ambitions. Their participation in the Savannah event sends a clear message: with the right approach, UC doesn’t have to stop anyone from living fully.

The half marathon will test their endurance, but both men are focused on the bigger picture. Their efforts aim to inspire others with UC and highlight the importance of research and support. By crossing the finish line, they hope to show that determination and proper care make anything possible.
