Lucerne pharmacy tests security patrols amid rising staff safety concerns

A pharmacy in Lucerne has introduced a two-week trial of security patrols inside and outside its premises. The move comes as staff report more frequent 'challenging situations' with certain visitors. Security services are now visible on-site to help maintain safety.

The pharmacy's decision follows a broader trend of rising security concerns in healthcare and retail settings. Bern's Inselspital, for example, recorded around 2,500 security interventions in 2025 alone. While exact figures for Swiss pharmacies adopting similar measures remain unclear, incidents of aggression toward staff have pushed some businesses to act.

The pharmacy in Lucerne has framed the trial as a way to create 'a safe environment' and improve 'overall customer safety.' Security personnel are monitoring both indoor and outdoor areas during the two-week period. Staff hope the presence will deter disruptive behaviour and reduce tensions with difficult visitors.

The trial reflects growing worries about workplace safety in Swiss pharmacies. If successful, the measure could encourage other stores to follow suit. For now, the pharmacy will assess whether the security patrols make a noticeable difference in daily operations.
