Europol's SHIELD VI Operation Dismantles €33M Underground Drug Network

A major crackdown on illegal performance-enhancing drugs has taken place across Europe. Operation SHIELD VI, led by Europol, uncovered 3,354 suspects in 30 countries. The operation also resulted in the seizure of millions of euros worth of banned substances and lab equipment.

The operation began with 4,186 inspections, leading to 907 new investigations. Among the findings were 43 organised criminal groups under scrutiny.

A key discovery was an underground lab in Vienna. This facility produced anabolic steroids and SARMs under unsanitary conditions. Unqualified staff worked there, violating health and safety standards.

Authorities seized 3,602 bottles of prohibited SARMs, including MK-677, MK-2866, RAD-140, and Dianabol. The total quantity of SARMs confiscated exceeded Austria's Anti-Doping Limit Regulations by 100,000 times. These substances alone could have generated nearly one million euros in sales.

In addition to the SARMs, officials confiscated 139,116 illegal packages, 3,285.14 kg of powder and raw materials, and 924.33 litres of active substances. Millions of empty capsules, cutting agents, and packaging materials were also found in the Vienna lab. The total value of all seized goods reached approximately €33 million.

During the operation, 5,517 in-competition and 5,916 out-of-competition anti-doping tests were carried out. These tests aimed to identify athletes using banned substances.

The operation disrupted a large-scale network of illegal drug production and distribution. With 3,354 suspects identified and €33 million in goods seized, authorities have made a significant impact on the underground trade. Further investigations into the 43 criminal groups remain ongoing.
