UAE and Philippines Team Up to Boost Healthcare for Overseas Workers

The UAE and the Philippines are working to improve healthcare access for Filipino workers in the Emirates. Officials from both nations have discussed plans for a formal medical coverage system under their national insurance schemes. The move aims to support the large Filipino community employed across various sectors in the UAE. Dr. Maha Barakat, UAE assistant minister for medical affairs and life science, met with Philippine health secretary Ted Herbosa to recognise his efforts in supporting Filipinos in the country. She also praised Filipino healthcare professionals globally, calling them 'world-class'.

The two sides are pushing for stronger health awareness campaigns focused on preventing chronic illnesses among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). The initiative will promote early screening, regular medical check-ups, and better understanding of preventive care. A key part of the cooperation involves creating a structured system to cover medical check-ups and treatments for OFWs in the UAE. This would integrate both countries’ national insurance programmes to ensure broader access to healthcare services.

The planned system would provide Filipino workers in the UAE with better medical support through their national insurance. Early detection and preventive care are central to the initiative. Officials from both nations continue discussions to finalise the details of the agreement.
