Anthem Bioscience, a contract research organisation, has transformed its 15-acre pharmaceutical campus in Bangalore with a cutting-edge digital system. The upgrade began in 2016 and combined multiple operations into a single integrated platform. This move improved efficiency just in time for the challenges of the pandemic. The company installed a unified system linking API, fermentation, biologics, and building management. This replaced the need for separate PLCs, cutting capital costs by up to $9,000 per piece of equipment. The approach also reduced reliance on external vendors through a virtualised architecture.

During the pandemic, the system allowed remote monitoring of critical operations via tablets and mobile phones. Human-machine interfaces provided real-time data, helping staff make quick decisions even with fewer workers on-site. The solution optimised both capital and operational spending while increasing system availability.

Looking ahead, Anthem plans to expand its digital strategy with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and predictive manufacturing.
