Zurich City Hospital Unites Specialists in New Spine Center for Better Care
Zurich City Hospital has launched a new Spine Center to improve treatment for spinal disorders. The facility brings together specialists from multiple medical fields under one roof. Until now, patients with spinal conditions were treated separately across different departments. The Spine Center aims to streamline care by uniting expertise from neurosurgery, rheumatology, neurology, radiology, orthopaedics, and pain therapy. PD Dr. Daniel Coluccia, head of the centre and chief physician of neurosurgery and spinal surgery, will oversee the collaboration. His team will use a dedicated Spine Board—an interdisciplinary panel—to review complex cases and decide on the best treatment options.
Spinal disorders often involve multiple underlying causes, making coordinated care essential. Previously, patients at Zurich City Hospital received treatment within individual specialties at different locations. The new centre eliminates this fragmentation, ensuring closer cooperation among all relevant experts.
Similar models of interprofessional collaboration are already in place at other Swiss institutions, such as aarReha Schinznach. The Spine Center reinforces Zurich City Hospital's broader commitment to integrated, patient-focused medicine. The Spine Center now provides a centralised approach to diagnosing and treating spinal conditions. By combining expertise from various specialties, the hospital expects more efficient and effective care for patients. The Spine Board will play a key role in assessing complex cases and guiding treatment decisions.
