Woman's Life Shattered After Routine Chiropractic Neck Adjustment

A woman from the US has suffered a rare but life-altering injury after a routine chiropractic neck adjustment. Jaycie Conley developed a bilateral vertebral artery dissection (VAD), leading to multiple strokes and permanent disability. Her case has raised concerns about the risks of neck manipulation, even when performed by professionals. Conley’s ordeal began when she visited a chiropractor for a neck adjustment. Shortly after the procedure, she experienced severe symptoms, including nausea and her eyes crossing uncontrollably. The chiropractor failed to recognise the signs of a stroke and sent her home.

In the hours that followed, Conley suffered two mini strokes. A third, more severe stroke struck while she was in hospital. Doctors later confirmed she had a bilateral VAD—a rare condition affecting both vertebral arteries, occurring in only 38% of VAD cases, or roughly 2,600 times a year in the US. The injury left her with lasting right-side weakness and speech difficulties. In 2022, she filed a negligence claim against the chiropractor, which was later settled. Medical experts warn that neck manipulation, whether by a chiropractor or self-administered, carries a small but serious risk—about one in 20,000 spinal adjustments may trigger VAD. Conley now advises others to avoid neck cracking and chiropractic treatments. She also urges anyone experiencing severe headaches, especially after childbirth, to seek emergency care immediately.

Conley’s case highlights the potential dangers of chiropractic neck adjustments, even when performed by trained practitioners. Her permanent disability serves as a stark reminder of the risks, prompting calls for greater awareness of VAD symptoms and faster medical intervention.
