Woman loses all limbs after dog's lick triggers deadly sepsis infection

A 52-year-old UK woman spent nearly eight months in a general hospital after a severe sepsis infection left her fighting for her life. Mandjit Sangha's ordeal began when a small cut, possibly licked by her dog, triggered a rapid and devastating infection that spread through her body.

The sepsis progressed quickly, causing Mandjit's condition to worsen within hours. The infection attacked her arms and legs, leading to multiple organ failures. Her heart stopped six times, and she lost consciousness repeatedly as doctors battled to stabilise her.

To save her life, surgeons amputated both legs below the knee, both arms, and removed her spleen. During her 32-week hospital stay, she also fought pneumonia and gallstones. Throughout the ordeal, her husband, Kam Sangha, stayed by her side, even celebrating their 37th wedding anniversary in her hospital room.

Sepsis is a life-threatening condition affecting around 50,000 people in Britain each year. In Germany, at least 230,000 cases are reported annually, with over 85,000 suffering severe consequences.

Since leaving the hospital, Mandjit has focused on fundraising for advanced prosthetics. She is also raising awareness about sepsis, sharing her story to highlight the speed and severity of the condition.

Mandjit Sangha's recovery continues as she adapts to her new life after losing her limbs. Her efforts to fundraise and educate others about sepsis aim to prevent similar tragedies. The case serves as a stark reminder of how quickly infections can turn life-threatening.
