Wolfsburg introduces mandatory online health training for food workers

Wolfsburg has launched a digital health instruction course under Germany's Infection Protection Act. The online training targets workers in food handling and restaurant kitchens. Participants must complete it before starting such jobs, with the certificate valid for three months. The course costs €26 and is available on the city's official portal, rathausonline.wolfsburg.de, under the 'Services' and 'Infection Protection' sections. Payment can be made via credit card or PayPal. A BundID account is required to access the training.

The instruction teaches participants to recognise early signs of infectious diseases. It also explains when health-related restrictions may prevent certain work activities. Upon completion, users receive a certificate, which employers must verify before allowing them to handle food or work in kitchens. Similar digital courses have been offered elsewhere, such as in Rhein-Kreis Neuss since 2018. Last year alone, 4,678 people completed the training there. The online format eliminates travel time and reduces administrative burdens for health authorities. Landkreis Aichach-Friedberg will introduce its own version from April 1, 2026, with instant certificate downloads and no need for appointments.

The digital course provides a flexible and secure way for food handlers to meet legal requirements. Workers in Wolfsburg can now complete the mandatory training online instead of in person. The system aims to streamline the process while ensuring compliance with health regulations.
