Wittstock's hospital to close by 2027 under federal healthcare reforms

Wittstock's hospital will close by January 1, 2027, as part of federal reforms. The KMG clinic group confirmed the decision, citing legal changes that prevent the site from operating in its current form. Despite the shutdown, political leaders are working to keep healthcare services in the rural Brandenburg region. The closure stems from new federal hospital regulations, which make Wittstock's current setup unsustainable. Brandenburg's Health Minister Britta Müller has stressed that all hospital locations in the state should remain—but not necessarily as traditional hospitals. Instead, alternatives like policlinics are being explored.

The SPD and BSW coalition have proposed converting the site into a policlinic by early 2027. Emergency care would stay, though cardiology and gastroenterology services will move to Pritzwalk. All four parliamentary factions—including the CDU and AfD—back keeping Wittstock as a healthcare hub, though their approaches differ.

For years, discussions in rural areas like Prignitz have focused on bundling services to preserve regional medical expertise. The SPD has pushed for expanding care options rather than shutting down sites entirely. Now, with the closure confirmed, the focus shifts to ensuring Wittstock remains a place for medical treatment in some capacity. The hospital's closure marks a shift, not an end, for Wittstock's healthcare. A policlinic and emergency services are planned to replace the old model. The state government and local factions agree on one point: the location must continue serving patients, even if its role changes.
