Why Your Daily Bacon Habit Could Be Harming Your Heart
Bacon remains a popular breakfast choice, but its health effects are raising concerns. A single slice contains around 10-15 mg of cholesterol, while a two-slice serving adds 90 calories and 7 grams of fat. Experts now warn that frequent consumption could harm heart health over time. Cardiologist Dennis Bruemmer, MD, PhD, highlights the risks of eating bacon regularly. He explains that combining multiple slices with eggs and carbohydrates can push cholesterol levels even higher. While turkey bacon offers about 20% less cholesterol than pork bacon, it still contains high amounts of salt and fat.
Bruemmer advises against simply switching to turkey bacon as a solution. Instead, he recommends adopting a Mediterranean Diet, which focuses on fruits, vegetables, and reduces high-salt, high-fat animal products. This approach, he suggests, provides a healthier long-term alternative to processed meats.
Bacon’s high cholesterol, salt, and fat content pose risks if eaten too often. A two-slice serving alone delivers a notable amount of unhealthy nutrients. For those concerned about heart health, dietary changes beyond just swapping bacon types may be necessary.
