Virginia's sweeping gun control bills spark fierce debate over Second Amendment rights
Virginia lawmakers are set to debate a series of strict gun control measures this week. The proposals include bans on semi-automatic firearms, new permit requirements, and tighter industry regulations. Critics argue these bills threaten the state's historical role in shaping U.S. gun rights.
The Senate Courts of Justice Committee began hearings on January 28, reviewing bills to create a 'permit to purchase' system and impose stricter standards on firearm manufacturers. Senate Bill 797 and Senate Bill 643 would require permits for all gun buyers, while Senate Bill 27 and House Bill 21 target the industry with regulations that opponents claim could force businesses to close.
The following day, the House Public Safety - Firearms Subcommittee, led by Del. Mike Mullin (D-Newport News), examined additional measures. These included bans on semi-automatic weapons and standard-capacity magazines, as well as House Bill 40, which would criminalise the possession of firearms without serial numbers—even those legally acquired before the law. House Bill 19 also expands restrictions for individuals with certain misdemeanour convictions.
Separately, Senate Bill 364 proposes establishing a 'Virginia Gun Violence Prevention Center' to fund research and intervention programmes. Meanwhile, the National Rifle Association's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA) has mobilised residents to contact lawmakers in opposition to the bills.
The hearings mark a significant push for gun control in a state with deep ties to the Second Amendment. If passed, the laws would introduce some of the strictest firearm regulations in Virginia's history. The outcomes will determine whether manufacturers, sellers, and owners face sweeping new restrictions.
