Tuberculosis Suspect at Kamenzer School Not Confirmed - Tuberculosis Cases in Eastern Germany Remain Isolated After Extensive Contact Tracing

Health authorities in eastern Germany have investigated multiple tuberculosis cases in early 2024. Two confirmed infections appeared in Sachsen, while another was detected in Brandenburg. Despite initial concerns, no wider outbreaks have been found.

The first case emerged in January at the Konrad Zuse Vocational Training Center in Kamenz, Sachsen. After confirmation, the Bautzen District Health Office traced 1800 close contacts. Of these, 127 were tested, but no new infections were detected.

A second suspected case at the same school was later ruled out. Officials confirmed that only one additional infection existed, but it was unrelated to the initial case. The health office stated that the general public faced no heightened risk.

Meanwhile, in Senftenberg, Brandenburg, a four-year-old child at a daycare tested positive. Around 130 contacts were identified, though no further cases have been confirmed so far. Testing remains ongoing.

Experts note that tuberculosis usually requires prolonged, close contact to spread. Early detection and treatment can cure roughly 85 percent of patients.

No additional infections have been found beyond the three confirmed cases. Health officials continue monitoring contacts in both regions. The situation remains under control, with no evidence of wider transmission.
