Tick-borne illnesses surge as Eastern Hospital reports 99 cases in 2024

The Eastern Hospital has reported a rise in tick-related illnesses this year. In 2024, doctors treated 67 cases of tick-borne encephalitis and 32 cases of Lyme disease. They are now urging the public to stay vigilant against tick bites, even in colder months. Over the past year, 1,169 ticks were removed from patients at the Eastern Hospital. Of these, 151 were tested for Lyme disease, with 47 (31%) carrying the infection. Another 141 ticks were checked for tick-borne encephalitis, but none tested positive.

The hospital also treated six patients for ehrlichiosis, a lesser-known tick-borne infection. Doctors advise monitoring for symptoms like headaches, fever, or unusual fatigue after a tick bite. Immediate medical attention is recommended if any of these signs appear. Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitis remains available year-round. While no nationwide figures for 2024 exist, Niedersachsen reported 13 cases of the disease. Protection measures are stressed even in winter and early spring, as ticks can remain active in milder conditions.

The Eastern Hospital's findings highlight the ongoing risk of tick-borne diseases. With 103 confirmed cases of encephalitis and Lyme disease combined, precautions and early medical checks are essential. Vaccination and regular tick checks remain key to reducing infections.
