Thane Offers Free Oxygen Concentrators to Ease Chronic Lung Disease Burden

Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has launched a new initiative to provide free oxygen concentrators for residents with chronic lung diseases. The decision comes as respiratory illnesses rise due to pollution, lifestyle changes, and post-COVID-19 complications. Officials say the move will ease pressure on hospitals and cut treatment costs for patients in need. The scheme will repurpose oxygen concentrators donated during the pandemic’s peak. All machines have been serviced and are now ready for immediate distribution. Priority will go to low-income patients suffering from asthma, pneumonia, lung infections, and other long-term respiratory conditions.

Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Prasad Patil proposed the plan, gaining backing from former Corporator Rajesh More and Mayor Sharmila Pipolkar. The initiative targets those requiring long-term oxygen therapy at home, where rising medical expenses often create financial strain. By offering free concentrators, TMC aims to ensure timely treatment while reducing hospital visits. The programme also seeks to relieve the burden on local healthcare facilities struggling with increased patient numbers.

Eligible residents will receive the devices without charge, helping them manage chronic conditions more affordably. The initiative addresses both health and economic challenges faced by vulnerable families in Thane. Officials have confirmed that all necessary preparations for distribution are now complete.
