Swine flu and H3N2 surge in Komi as child infections dominate
Flu cases are climbing in the Komi region, with the latest figures showing a clear rise in infections. While the current rate remains below the epidemic threshold, health officials have confirmed the circulation of two influenza A strains: H3N2 and the more severe A(H1N1)pdm09, also known as swine flu.
Between 24 and 30 November, 9,108 people in Komi sought treatment for acute respiratory infections. Over half of these cases—5,311, or 58.3%—were children, while adults accounted for the remaining 41.7%.
A week earlier, infection levels sat 35.6% below the epidemic threshold. Now, that gap has narrowed to 25.5%, signalling a steady increase in flu activity. The trend has raised concerns, particularly given the history of A(H1N1)pdm09, which dominated the 2022–2023 season and caused severe complications, including fatalities.
On 4 January 2025, a suspected swine flu case prompted emergency action. A passenger travelling on the Moscow–Usinsk train was removed in Mikun after showing symptoms and later hospitalised at the Ust-Vym Central District Hospital. No details have been released comparing this year's strain spread to previous seasons in the region.
The rise in flu cases, combined with the detection of A(H1N1)pdm09, suggests a potentially challenging season ahead. Hospitals and clinics in Komi are monitoring the situation closely, with children currently representing the majority of infections. Health authorities continue to track the spread, though specific comparisons to last year's outbreak remain unavailable.
