Solingen Hospital Expands Emergency Care with Major 24-Month Upgrade

Solingen Municipal Hospital has initiated a major expansion of its Central Emergency Department (CED). The project, part of a broader modernisation plan, will take 24 months to complete. Changes to parking, access routes, and emergency vehicle traffic are already in place.

The hospital's latest phase focuses on the new Stationärbereich-Baugruppe, with construction scheduled from early 2025 until the end of 2026. Key steps so far include planning approval in late 2024, groundbreaking in January 2025, and completion of foundation work by December 2025. Once finished, the Central Emergency Department's capacity will double, with clearer separation between emergency vehicles, private cars, and pedestrians.

Access routes near the CED are being rebuilt to prepare for the future inpatient ward building. Emergency traffic has been rerouted away from the construction zone and general visitor paths. Four extra treatment cubicles will also open in the existing building by early next year.

Visitors are asked to follow marked routes and use the parking garage. The three 'stork parking spaces' for expectant mothers have moved to the accessible section of the garage. Private parking in the former CED access area is now banned, though brief stops for patient drop-offs or pick-ups remain allowed at the main entrance.

Hospital CEO Prof. Dr. Martin Eversmeyer emphasised the need for expansion due to rising patient numbers and limited treatment space.

The project aims to enhance emergency care efficiency and patient flow. With construction underway, the hospital anticipates smoother operations once the upgrades are complete. Visitors should check for updates on access and parking changes during the works.
