Sleeping with the TV On Could Harm Your Health
Russian neurologist Tatiana Khrebtova has warned about the dangers of this common habit, Khabarovsk Territory Today reports, citing RIA Novosti.
The expert explained that a screen left on while a person sleeps can lead to cardiovascular problems. First, flickering light and shifts in brightness trigger a stronger reaction in the brain than a steady, dim light source. Second, sound plays a key role:
"TV noise causes micro-arousals—brief awakenings people don't remember but that disrupt sleep continuity. The brain never fully shuts down, continuing to process significant signals," the neurologist noted.
As a result, sleep quality deteriorates. Over time, this can lead to elevated blood pressure and blood sugar levels, as well as chronic low-grade inflammation in the body.
"All of this increases the risk of stroke and other cardiovascular issues," the expert warned. "People with hypertension, diabetes, obesity, lipid metabolism disorders, sleep apnea, atrial fibrillation, or those who smoke should be especially cautious."
