Young Patient's Life Saved by Skilled Pediatric Neurosurgeons
In Almaty, doctors at Children's City Clinical Hospital No. 2 performed a highly complex neurosurgical procedure that saved the life of a six-year-old child with a large brain tumor, reports our website.
The child was urgently transferred to Hospital No. 2 from another medical facility in critical condition, following coordination between the leadership of both hospitals. Doctors diagnosed a craniopharyngioma—a tumor located in one of the brain's most delicate and high-risk areas.
The condition had already led to hydrocephalus (a disorder marked by excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain) and was accompanied by severe symptoms: intense headaches, repeated vomiting, and impaired vision. Given the rapid deterioration of the child's health, an emergency surgery was deemed necessary.
The operation was performed by Marat Rabandiyarov, Kazakhstan's leading pediatric neurosurgeon and director of Hospital No. 2. Thanks to his expertise, experience, and the use of advanced technologies—including neuronavigation—the team successfully conducted a microsurgical removal of a significant portion of the tumor with precision and safety.
"The tumor's location posed a particular challenge, as it was situated near the optic pathways and critical structures responsible for hormonal regulation. Nevertheless, we achieved effective decompression and restored fluid drainage in the brain," Rabandiyarov noted.
The procedure was carried out under Kazakhstan's compulsory social health insurance system, which covers all children.
The postoperative period proceeded without complications. The child's condition stabilized, and positive progress has been observed. Crucially, the need for a shunt system was avoided, significantly reducing the risk of future complications.
This case highlights the advanced state of pediatric neurosurgery in Kazakhstan today. The professionalism of medical teams, the precision of surgical interventions, and the application of cutting-edge technology enable successful treatment of even the most complex conditions, giving children a chance at a full and healthy life.
